The women’s, open, women’s masters and open masters divisions will play in Edmonton from August 15-18, 2019. Brampton will then host the mixed and mixed masters divisions from August 22-25, 2019.

What is Ultimate?

Ultimate is a non-contact sport played by two teams of seven players each. The objective of the game is for a team to pass the disc from player to player, all the way up the field, and catch the disc in their end-zone, which scores a point. Players cannot run with the disc, but must plant a pivot foot and throw the disc to a teammate. When holding the disc, a player gets ten seconds to throw it.

If the offensive team fails to complete any pass, whether through defensive effort or an unforced error, the former defensive team picks up the disc where it lands and works to score in the opposite direction. Defenses employ both person-on-person and zone strategies in their attempts to force a turnover.

The most important part of Ultimate is “The Spirit of the Game”. This is used to describe the respect that every player in the game has for the rules and their fellow players. No referees exist. Instead, the players themselves officiate. Implicit in Ultimate is the assumption that no one will cheat to gain an unfair advantage.

This principle is what makes Ultimate special to so many people, and all Ultimate players try to keep the Spirit alive by maintaining this high level of trust, no matter how competitive the game becomes.

CUC History

The Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC) Series is a series of provincial and national tournaments. The series takes place every summer with teams from across the country competing to represent at the Canadian Ultimate Championships. Teams must qualify through Regional Events. There are eight divisions to compete in: junior open and junior women, open, women, mixed, open masters, women’s masters and mixed masters.

The first Canadian Ultimate Championships were held in 1987 in Ottawa, Ontario. As the event continued to grow, divisions have been separated to create their own unique tournaments. In 2013, the Junior Open and Junior Women’s divisions were separated from the adult divisions. As of 2016, the Adult Mixed division will run as its own stand-alone event.
